“Oldboy” Director Expelled From WGA

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced that it has expelled two members, celebrated “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden” filmmaker Park Chan-wook and writer Don McKellar.

The expulsion is said to be due to the pair writing on their HBO miniseries “The Sympathiser” during the 2023 writer’s strike.

Park and McKellar co-created the seven-episode 2004 airing TV series starring Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey, Jr. and based on the 2015 novel of the same name by writer Viet Thanh Nguyen.

The guild indicates Park and McKellar did not appeal their expulsions. Both have screenplay credit on Park’s new film “No Other Choice”.

In addition, Anthony Cipriano has been suspended through to May 1st 2026 for writing on the supernatural thriller “The Last Breath”. Cipriano was also given a public censure and a lifetime ban on serving as a strike captain.

The WGA previously indicated seven writers were disciplined for various alleged violations during the strike, with four publicly identified at the time. The other three had remained unidentified until yesterday.
