“Resurrection of the Christ” Gets Split In Two

Newmarket Films

Lionsgate has confirmed that Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated “The Resurrection of the Christ” is going the “Deathly Hallows”/”Mockingjay” route and will be split into two films.

The sequels to “The Passion of the Christ” will be released just a few weeks apart, with the first one (‘Part One’) hitting cinemas on Good Friday, March 26th 2027.

The second one (‘Part Two’) then arrives nearly six weeks later on Ascension Day on May 6th 2027.

Both films mark the follow-up to 2004’s “The Passion of the Christ,” which held the record of the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically until “Deadpool & Wolverine” claimed it last year.

Gibson is producing through his Icon Productions label. The project has been in the works for nearly a decade, with the aim to have Jim Caviezel reprising his role as Jesus, helped along by digital de-aging technology.

Production aims to begin in late summer in European locations.
