Two years ago, a report emerged online that Ubisoft had begun development on a remake of the popular 2013 “Assassin’s Creed” entry “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag”. At the time, the title was years off from being announced, let alone released, assuming the report was true.
Made for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the original game was set primarily on and around the islands in the Caribbean Sea during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century.
Actor Matt Ryan, best known for his role as John Constantine in the DC Arrowverse, played the game’s protagonist Edward Kenway and was surreptitiously filmed at a convention in June, hinting that a remake was on the way, albeit in a way that could easily be interpreted in a number of ways.
Asking a fan at the time if they’d beaten the game, the fan replied they had, when Ryan said: “Well, you may have to beat it again”.
Not much there, but more recently in a video posted on TikTok (via X) Ryan was asked if there’s a remaster coming, to which he replied “I don’t know, mate.”
Asked about his previous comments, Ryan explained he didn’t realise he was being filmed and indicated Ubisoft had responded to the original video: “I was being very free and open, but I didn’t know that they actually were recording me on their phone, and then the company threatened to sue me. Yeah, so I say nothing.”
The news has drawn surprise on social media, where many gamers have long been discussing a “Black Flag” remake as a given at this point, even as Ubisoft has not officially announced such a project at this time.
Earlier this year, during a live stream, statue maker Pure Arts also reportedly hinted at the game’s existence, saying “something is going on with Edward [Kenway]” and when they release a new version of the Kenway statue, it will “reflect that accordingly”.
To this day, the original title often sits high on ‘best game in the series’ lists alongside the Venice-set second one and the more recent “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey”.
