“Star Wars” Returns To Cinemas For 50th

Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm and Disney have made it official – the original “Star Wars” will return to screens in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

“Star Wars: A New Hope” is set to be released in cinemas on April 30th 2027, the company finally formalising the plans today with an announcement on StarWars.com.

This has long been expected, but it’s only now that the studio has made it official. The title will be released approximately four weeks ahead of the Ryan Gosling-led “Star Wars: Starfighter” film opening on May 28th 2027.

The big question is which version. Since the launch of the ‘Special Edition’ versions in 1997 theatrically, those and subsequently tinkered with takes have been the versions that have been re-released in cinemas.

Calling it “Star Wars: A New Hope” suggests it will be the special edition. An ultra-rare vintage print of the film was screened in London a while back for the BFI, and there’s been rumor that Lucasfilm is working on something more akin to the original cuts.

Disney will release “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” the first “Star Wars” film to hit theaters since 2019, next year.
