Following its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, the teaser trailer has been released for “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” – the new series in the venerable franchise, which will debut in early 2026.
The full cast was introduced, including Holly Hunter as Nahla Ake, the captain of the USS Athena and the chancellor of the Academy, who greets the new class of cadets.
Also seen in the trailer is Paul Giamatti as the season’s main villain Nus Braka, a part Klingon/part Tellarite who has a sinister past tied to one of the cadets.
The series takes place in the 32nd century, following the events of “Star Trek: Discovery,” as a rebuilt Starfleet relaunches the titular educational institution outside of San Francisco. The Federation has been absent from Earth for more than 120 years, causing various issues.
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman says the aim of the show was to “anchor us back to [Gene] Rodneyberry’s essential vision of hope. How do you find it, how do you rebuild it?”
Cadets include the likes of a human orphan (Sandro Rosta), a cadet from a wealthy family with high expectations (George Hawkins), a Klingon doctor (Karim Diané), a hologram (Kerrice Brooks), and the new species Dar-Sha (Bella Shepard).
Other characters include Zoë Steiner as the daughter of Betazed’s President, Gina Yashere as a Klingon/Jem’Hadar hybrid while “Orphan Black” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” star Tatiana Maslany reportedly has a recurring role.
There’s also several returnees – Robert Picardo reprising his role as The Doctor from “Star Trek: Voyager” while Tig Notaro, Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr return to their “Star Trek: Discovery” roles of Jett Reno, Sylvia Tilly and Admiral Vance respectively.
The producers have also teased connections to TNG, DS9 and Prodigy.
