IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond has confirmed on CNBC that filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is shooting the upcoming “Dune Messiah” entirely with IMAX cameras.
It will mark only the second film to shoot completely with the tech, the first being Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” which has been in production since February and is reportedly aiming to wrap in the next few weeks.
Gelfond revealed back in May that production is using new camera technology that’s considerably lighter, quieter and faster than regular IMAX – allowing for it to be used throughout the entire film.
Villeneuve’s “Dune Messiah” is reportedly kicking off production as early as today in Budapest with filming to run for much of the rest of the year.
Events begin twelve years later with Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) ruling as Emperor, married to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) while maintaining a relationship with his concubine Chani (Zendaya).
Forces plot against him, including the Bene Tleilax – an arcane, xenophobic sect of genetic manipulators who traffic in biological products.
Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem and Anya Taylor-Joy will return, joined by Robert Pattinson as the Face Dancer Scytale and both Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke as Paul’s children.
Linus Sandgren is cinematographer, Hans Zimmer returns to do the score and the film itself will hit cinemas on December 18th 2026.
