Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement for the “Spaceballs” sequel which is moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios very shortly.
The studio has set a 2027 theatrical release for the movie with the original’s legendary funnyman Mel Brooks and original hero Bill Pullman also coming back for the project.
It’s expected the trio will reprise their original film roles of Dark Helmet, Yogurt and Lone Starr and will be joined by Keke Palmer in the sequel which Josh Greenbaum will direct from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad.
Gad is also expected to star and will produce alongside Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Brooks, and Greenbaum. The project is being described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film”.
The original film was a parody of “Star Wars” and co-starred Daphne Zuniga along with the late John Candy and Joan Rivers.
A sequel has long been discussed as a possibility but only recently has it really seemed to coalesce with Gad spearheading efforts.
