Universal Pictures has announced that the teaser trailer for “Wicked: For Good,” the film adapting the back half of the stage musical “Wicked,” proved incredibly popular.
Launched last week, the trailer was reportedly viewed 113 million times in its first 24 hours – well above the first full trailer for last year’s “Wicked” which pulled in 75 million views in its first 24 hours.
In fact, the number is on par with Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and above recent blockbusters like “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”.
It can’t hold a candle to the biggest one of the past few years – Marvel’s “Deadpool and Wolverine” which snagged 365 million views in 24 hours.
Before the trailer debuted online, the studio unveiled the footage at special one-night screenings of “Wicked” on Wednesday last week.
The new film sees Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship put to the test as they part ways and the Wicked Witch of the West is declared an enemy of the state by the Wizard.
The first film generated $744 million globally, the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in history. “Wicked: For Good” is scheduled for release on November 22nd.
