Universal Pictures has released a cryptic early teaser trailer for the sequel to filmmaker Scott Derrickson’s critically acclaimed 2022 horror thriller “The Black Phone”.

Mason Thames starred in the first film, a young teenager abducted by a child killer (Ethan Hawke) in a suburban neighborhood and locked in a soundproof basement.

He begins to get unearthly calls on a disconnected rotary phone from his deranged captor’s previous victims, all trying to help him to figure out a way to escape before he becomes the next one.

Derrickson is directing, producing and co-writing the follow-up with C. Robert Cargill, while Jason Blum is also producing. The core cast of Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora are all confirmed to be returning as well while Demian Bichir is joining them this time out.

The first film was also one of the most profitable films of 2022 – taking in $161 million worldwide from a budget of around 10% of that.

“The Black Phone 2” opens in cinemas on October 17th 2025.
