Paramount Pictures has officially announced that “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” will be released in cinemas on March 19th 2027.
The studio announced the fourth film last month before the third hit the screen in December. That third film has grossed $218 million domestically and $422 million globally to date and is the franchise’s highest-grossing entry.
In addition, it received the best reviews of the franchise so far. The title just hit digital today and contains a post-credits sequence teasing at least one key new character joining the franchise.
The original 2020 “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie made $319 million worldwide and set a record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation, with $405 million worldwide. Those first two films also drove over $180 million in global consumer spending on digital purchases and rentals.
Earlier this month, the overall franchise surpassed $1 billion in box office receipts worldwide, which means the two biggest game-to-film franchises are currently Mario and Sonic.
There is no word as yet regarding what talent in front or behind the camera will return for “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” when it arrives in cinemas March 2027. Still, it’s likely that director Jeff Wadlow and key cast members like Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Shemar Moore and Tika Sumpter will be back.
The big question as to Jim Carrey’s involvement won’t be known for a while as the fate of Carrey’s character at the end of both the second and third films is left unclear.
