“God of War” TV Series Starts Over

The TV series adaptation of PlayStation’s beloved “God of War” video game franchise is going to take a while longer.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios have scrapped all the work done so far on the ancient mythology-themed series and are starting from scratch.

As a result, showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins (“The Wheel of Time”), along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus (“Iron Mam”) have all left the project.

Multiple scripts for the first season were completed and reportedly praised by both Sony and Prime, but the studios are apparently looking to move in a different creative direction instead.

A whole new writers room will now be hired for the series which reportedly remains an important asset for Prime. Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang remain onboard executive producers.

The adaptation was first announced in December 2022 and will follow the storyline of the two games of the reboot era which began in 2018.

In those titles, a warrior named Kratos exiles himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece and hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard.

When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak – battling new gods and monsters for the fate of the world along the way.

The franchise has won critical praise for its various entries, with the 2018 title taking Game of the Year at the Game Awards.
