A fourth “Spider-Man” in the Tom Holland-led version of the franchise seems likely at this point, but it’s not clear when it might go into production.
Recently though, new details emerged (via Screen Rant) regarding what would’ve been a film tied back to Holland’s predecessor Andrew Garfield. Garfield’s first two Spider-Man films drop hints of a planned “Sinister Six” movie which Sony seems to have long abandoned.
The release of Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales and Gavin Edwards’ book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios” this month has revealed Sony was planning on including Marvel’s Savage Land – a tropical prehistoric preserve hidden in Antarctica – in the action:
“By the end of 2014, [Drew Goddard] had a draft that took Spider-Man and his villains to the Savage Land, where Spider-Man would ride a T-Rex.”
After the box-office disappointment of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Sony and Marvel came to an agreement that led to a reboot of the “Spider-Man” franchise that would be incorporated into the MCU. Sony has pursued its own spin-off films since but hasn’t resurrected any plans for a “Sinister Six” film at this point.
To date, only Holland’s last film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is the closest we’ve gotten to a Sinister Six film – albeit with only five villains. The book also revealed that the original pitch for ‘No Way Home’ was to incorporate Kraven the Hunter as the main villain of the piece, but the character was unavailable because Sony wanted to establish him in his own solo film first.
Well, they got their wish and a solo Kraven movie is on the way early next year. In addition, Kraven the Hunter serves as one of the primary antagonists in this week’s “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” video game release.
