The BBC has unveiled the new theme tune for its long-running “Doctor Who” TV series ahead of a concert celebrating the franchise’s 60th anniversary.
Radio presenter Jo Whiley will host the special “Doctor Who @60: A Musical Celebration” for BBC Radio 2 on Sunday night. Alastair King conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC Singers for the special which is already available early on BBC Sounds.
The network has officially released a clip teasing the newly arranged main title theme tune which sees Murray Gold returning to the franchise after having sat out the Whittaker/Chibnall era of the series for the past few years. The new take on the famous theme boasts a more brassy orchestral and choral take than some of the other more recent incarnations which have moved away from that tone.
It’s expected that the theme tune will first air as part of the “Doctor Who” three special episodes airing this November featuring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.
That’s not all though as two other crucial pieces of music have been released online as well from the special – the individual themes of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and his new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) titled ‘Fifteen’ and ‘The Life of Sunday’ respectively. Davies himself, commenting on the new theme, jokes that as we can hear the series is “coming back subtler than ever”.
Check out all three themes below. All three Tennant-led specials are expected to air next month with Gatwa getting a Christmas/New Year special and a full first season run in 2024.
