Out promoting DreamWorks Animation’s animated horror series “Fright Krewe” this week, co-creator Eli Roth spoke about a number of projects he has on the way.
The ten-episode coming-of-age series is now streaming on both Hulu and Peacock, but Roth has been busy with other projects including his dark comedy horror slasher “Thanksgiving,” and the long-in-the-works film adaptation of the “Borderlands” video games.
In regards to the latter he spoke with Coming Soon about the movie, which still remains relatively secret and has offered no good glimpses of the characters yet (beyond silhouettes) and no trailers thus far.
He says the movie will retain the wacky spirit of the original games and the film involved game creator Randy Pitchford every step of the way:
“It’s bananas. I really wanted to keep the spirit of the movie in the spirit of the games. Randy Pitchford, the creator, was there with me every step of the way.
If I had my own idea for a joke that’s not part of Borderlands in the canon, he’s like, ‘Oh, that’s great. Claptrap would absolutely do this.’
All the character stuff that I wanted them to do, I’m like, ‘Okay, would Lilith do something like this?’ Or, ‘Is this a Tiny Tina move?’ He’s like, ‘That is so fantastic. We should do that in the game. That’s really, really terrific.’
So yeah, the film is fun. It is wild. It was a massive, massive undertaking – especially in Covid. People are going to have to wait a little longer for that one, but I’m really, really thrilled with it.”
The film boasts an all-star cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett, Édgar RamÃrez, Gina Gershon, Cheyenne Jackson, Janina Gavankar, Bobby Lee, Olivier Richters and Penn Jillette.
However, there’s also been talk of behind-the-scenes adjustments of the film which may be partly why “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us” showrunner Craig Mazin removed his name from the film.
“Borderlands” is slated for release sometime in 2024.
