Scott Talks “Napoleon” Director’s Cut Plans

Sony Pictures

As previously reported on, filmmaker Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Napoleon” is getting a much longer director’s cut at some point. Right now we know the film’s theatrical release with Sony Pictures clocks in at around 158 minutes.

Joaquin Phoenix stars in the film which chronicles the famed French leader’s life, victories, and ultimate defeat. It also traces his relationship with Empress Joséphine who is played by Vanessa Kirby.

Now, speaking with Total Film, Scott confirms his current director’s cut of the film is over four hours long and it’s not clear if Scott intends to cut his extended version down any further:

“I’m working on it. It was four [hours] 10 [minutes] this morning. And so what will happen is, we’ll screen [the theatrical cut] first with Sony, and then it has its run, and then the perfect thing is that [the director’s cut] goes to streaming, and we have four hours 10 minutes.”

Also starring are Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Matthew Needham, Youssef Kerkour, Rupert Everettz, Paul Rhys, Catherine Walker, Gavin Spokes, John Hollingworth, Mark Bonnar and Sam Crane.

“Napoleon” is scheduled to be released theatrically on November 22nd before the director’s cut streams exclusively on Apple TV+ on an undisclosed date.
