Third “Spider-Verse” Akin To “Parent Trap”?

It’s still not exactly clear when we’ll get around to seeing “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” in cinemas. The resolution to the cliffhanger at the end of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was originally slated for next March.

However the movie was pulled from the schedule this Summer, reportedly due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and the delay followed a report about the lack of production progress on the film suggesting a 2024 release at all seemed unlikely.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE”

The final moments of the film reveal that Miles was now stuck in an alternate universe where the version of him became the Prowler instead of Spider-Man.

In a new interview with Empire (via The Direct), producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord along with director Joaquim Dos Santos were asked how much of the third film was planned out when they were still working on the first film (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”).

Miller indicated they really hadn’t planned anything for a third one with Dos Santos then reportedly saying: “There were some emotional touchstones resonating early on. I think the take early on was way more of a ‘Prince And The Pauper’ take.”

Miller added: “It was more about the alternate Miles. Basically, the thing that is now the very, very end of the movie was the bulk of the original concept.”

Dos Santos also says “there were some ‘Parent Trap’ elements” with the story” to which Miller says those elements would come into play in the third film: “Basically, that ended up becoming the second half of the movie, which then ended up becoming mostly the third movie.”

For those unfamiliar, “The Parent Trap” sees two identical twins, separated at birth but who recently discovered each other, opting to switch places and act as though they were the other twin. Hayley Mills played the double roles in the original 1961 film, whilst a young Lindsay Lohan played them in the 1998 remake.

“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” likely won’t hit cinemas until 2025.
