Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has confirmed, via a Q&A session at the BFI London Film Festival this week, that his Rooney Mara-led biopic of the late and great Audrey Hepburn has been scrapped.
Back in early 2022 came word that “Carol” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” star Mara will both star in and produce the Hepburn feature at Apple Studios.
At the same time “Call Me by Your Name” and “Bones and All” director Guadagnino was set to direct from a script by Michael Mitnick (“The Giver”). The nature of the film was unknown.
Earlier this year Mara indicated on a podcast that filming was to happen later this year, now though Guadagnino says in a video tweet from the cinema session:
“Unfortunately that project is not happening… It’s very sad, was a great script. Of course, a great actress to play Audrey. Maybe, one day.”
Guadagnino is keeping incredibly busy. He has the Zendaya and Josh O’Connor-led “Challengers” film arriving early next year, he’s directing Bret Easton Ellis’ “The Shards” for HBO, he finished shooting the Daniel Craig-led period drama “Queer,” and is developing new takes on “Lord of the Flies” and “Scarface”.
Hepburn was both a dedicated humanitarian and an actress famed for numerous iconic films from rom-coms like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Sabrina” and “Roman Holiday” to the musical “My Fair Lady,” psychological thriller “Wait Until Dark,” romance mystery “Charade” and drama “The Nun’s Story” among many others. Over four decades she achieved EGOT status – winning Emmy, Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.
