Talk of a new live-action film based on Todd McFarlane’s “Spawn” comics has been swirling since seemingly the turn of the millennium.
In the comics, Spawn is a former black-ops agent who makes a deal with a demon after being betrayed and killed. The demon allows him to return to Earth, but when he returns, five years have passed, his wife has moved on and he roams Earth as a disfigured spawn of hell.
In more recent years, the project has been set up at Blumhouse where a succession of writers have been linked to pen the script. McFarlane was long insistent on directing himself but has softened his stance on that front recently.
Now Blum, speaking with ComicBook.com during press for “The Exorcist: Believer,” has set a firm target date for the film and says: “2025 is when Spawn is going to come out. I stand by that. I stand by that.”
McFarlane has described the tone of the film to the outlet as being in between Amazon’s “The Boys” and a “traditional horror movie” and says the plans for the film are ambitious:
“They’re not looking for a big extravaganza. But, they’re also not looking for an $8 million dollar horror movie budget… We’re taking a pretty big moonshot of what we think we can pull off in Hollywood. If we can pull it off, it will be a big deal, financially, and once you get into those conversations, they’re going to want to do it in a way that they can then get their money back.”
“Spawn” was previously adapted to the screen as both an acclaimed animated HBO series, and a not-so-acclaimed 1997 New Line film.
