As of this weekend, Sony’s film adaptation of its PlayStation video game franchise “Gran Turismo” passed the $100 million mark – hitting $103 million at the worldwide box-office.
Made on a production budget of $60 million, the mixed reviews film got off to a soft start with its $17.4 million domestic opening weekend bolstered by a further $5.3 million in previews. Numbers plummeted from there in the United States.
Yet the film has hung on in there internationally to the point that after a month it has broken the $100 million mark and thus could ultimately end up in profit for Sony once home video sales/rentals and other ancillary revenue are taken into account.
Whilst it’s not a complete car crash, it is a far cry from PlayStation Productions’ other game-to-film/series adaptations so far, with the “Uncharted” film taking in $402 million in box-office from a $120 million budget.
HBO’s “The Last of Us” series was a critical and commercial smash-up for two dozen or so Emmy awards. Even Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” series scored both a fanbase and became one of the streamer’s most watched streaming originals.
With the strikes ongoing, it’s not clear what will be the next game property being adapted for the screen as films based on “Ghost of Tsushima” and “Days Gone” are on the way along with Netflix’s “Horizon: Zero Dawn” and Amazon’s “God of War” shows.
