Filmmaker Kevin Greutert says that the upcoming “Saw X” will be the most standalone and accessible film since the original.
Set between the events of “Saw” and “Saw II,” the film follows a sick and desperate John Kramer (Tobin Bell) who travels to Mexico for an experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam.
Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists with his signature visceral and deranged traps.
Speaking with Total Film (via Games Radar), Greutert explains that the new film will avoid the convoluted mythology of the various prior sequels and, as being set between the first second, serves as something of a direct sequel to the original:
“I truly believe that this is the most standalone Saw film since the first one. It’s not about knowing or remembering anything about the previous films. It’s a richer experience if you know about Saw because otherwise you won’t necessarily know who Amanda is when she appears, but it’s very clear from the beginning what’s happening.”
Shawnee Smith reprises her role of Amanda Young in the film, which also stars Synnove Macody Lund, Michael Beach, and Steven Brand. There’s also a return to the iconic bathroom trap from the first film.
As for where the franchise might go next, he says: “There’s no obvious new direction to go after this film. But I think there probably will be more Saw movies, particularly if this one is successful.”
“Saw X” is scheduled to open in cinemas on September 29th.
