Warner Bros. Pictures has set a September 5th digital release date for the “Barbie” movie, with the film to be available to buy for $19.99 approximately 46 days after it hit cinemas.
The news comes as the currently in cinemas movie has become the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie in the studio’s 100-year history across the domestic box office.
The Greta Gerwig-directed Mattel doll adaptation has now pushed past Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film “The Dark Knight” (at $534.9M) as it has racked up $537.4 million in North America to date.
Worldwide, the film remains the second highest-grossing movie for Warner Bros. behind only “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part Two” which made $1.34 billion.
“Barbie” crossed the half billion mark in North America on Day 22, easily beating both “Top Gun Maverick” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” which both took a full month to get to that point.
Despite still going strong, the film is expected to be knocked off the top spot at the box-office this weekend by Warners’ “Blue Beetle” film which is tracking for a $28-32 million debut.
