Sony and Marvel’s upcoming “Spider-Man’ universe film “Kraven the Hunter” is skipping the usual hero structure for a tale that its director J.C. Chandor dubs ‘a tragedy’.
Esquire has published a new feature piece on the film’s star Aaron Taylor-Johnson which has gone into various films and aspects of his career and life. With that, a good section of it discussed the ‘Kraven’ film.
It confirms Chandor’s movie is set before Kraven and Spider-Man’s first meeting and follows a young Sergei’s relationship with his gangster father (Russell Crowe). He goes on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world.
The iconic storyline “Kraven’s Last Hunt” which ends with Kraven committing suicide, defined their approach to the film. Though Kraven’s a long way from being killed off just yet, that final fate means there’s not a hopeful tone here. Chandor explains:
“Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this, but the story is a tragedy. When the final credits roll on this film, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t have the feeling that this is all going to end great.”
Taylor-Johnson confirmed he got up to 200 pounds in terms of his body weight to portray a believable hunter.
Fred Hechinger, Ariana DeBose, Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola also star. “Kraven the Hunter” is currently slated to open on August 30th 2024.
