“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Casts Key Role

Paramount+

The second season finale of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is now available on the Paramount+ service, and with it comes a key bit of casting for the franchise.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS” SEASON 2 FINALE EPISODE “HEGEMONY”

The episode deals with the Gorn invasion of a colony, and partway through the episode we meet one of the survivors – a Lieutenant Junior Grade engineer with a Scottish brogue and answering to the name Montgomery Scott.

Kept under wraps until the episode aired, it has now been confirmed that actor 29-year-old actor Martin Quinn has been cast as ‘Scotty’ who will one day become chief engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Captain Kirk.

Quinn grew up in Gallowhill, Scotland – less than an hour’s drive away from Linlithgow which is the birthplace of the Montgomery Scott character. He started out on stage playing the lead role in a production of “Let The Right One In” both in Scotland and on London’s West End.

He’s appeared in guest starring slots on numerous series, including “Derry Girls,” “Annika” and “Scot Squad” and provided additional voices for the recent video game release “Diablo IV”.

The finale is a cliffhanger, and thus Quinn is likely to return for the third season premiere. Whether he’ll stick around as a regular or recurring guest star next season isn’t clear at this point.

With this, the series has now cast four of the seven core characters from the original “Star Trek” series – Scotty, Kirk (Paul Wesley), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Spock (Ethan Peck). That leaves McCoy, Sulu and Chekov, all of whom are yet to be cast.

Filming on the show’s third season was originally slated to run from May 2nd to September 28th. However, the writer’s and actor’s strikes have now halted that, with the show not able to begin filming the new run until both have ended.
