Netflix is reportedly pulling Jane Campion’s 2021 western “The Power of the Dog” from the UK branch of its service next month.
The streaming service lists that the last day to watch the Benedict Cumberbatch-led film, which is a Netflix original movie, is August 18th. For now, this removal only seems to apply to the UK.
Netflix handled most of the film’s global distribution, but BBC Films and the New Zealand Film Commission were among the production companies.
The film scored universal acclaim from critics and led the Oscar nominations for the year with twelve, winning Campion a Best Director award in the process.
This is not the first time something like this has happened with A Netflix original film. UK horror feature “His House” taken off Netflix UK and made available on BBC iPlayer.
It’s likely the same is happening here as a Netflix representative confirmed to Digital Spy that the film’s original distribution deal included a one-year exclusive window for the BBC.
Thus, after that year is up, the movie is expected to go back on Netflix UK. Cumberbatch will next be seen in Wes Anderson’s Netflix short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”.
