For years now, there’s been on again/off again talk about a third film in “The Princess Diaries” franchise that helped forge Anne Hathaway’s career.
Efforts took a serious blow a decade ago with the loss of director Garry Marshall. But then about four years ago, Aadrita Mukerji was hired to pen a script for a new installment that would continue the Hathaway-led films rather than reboot the property.
For two years there was nothing until late 2024 when it was revealed Adele Lim (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) would be directing the film and Flora Greeson was writing the screenplay. Location scouting began in mid-2025 but then things seemed to stall.
Still out there promoting “The Odyssey,” Hathaway appeared on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy and explained the delay partly came down to her personal life, but also has allowed them to come up with an angle that has everyone fired up.
“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make ‘Princess Diaries 3,’ I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction.
The script that we were working on – we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”
Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, now Queen of Genovia, in the threequel. The original film launched in 2001 and was followed by a sequel in 2004 – both movies making a combined $300 million worldwide.
