Recently came the news that filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed 2006 rival magicians film “The Prestige” would be getting a 20th anniversary re-release on January 21st 2027.
Why is it taking so long to put out? Turns out there’s a specific reason for it – the movie is getting an upgrade to 70mm film.
Speaking with THR, Nolan revealed the film, shot on 35mm film by cinematographer Wally Pfister, will undergo a careful conversion process.
“I’m just really excited to bring it to fresh audiences. We’re actually going to do 70 millimetre blow-ups. Wally Pfister shot it anamorphically on 35 millimetre, and he did an incredible job. I screened a 35 mil print the other day to check it, and his photography is just extraordinary.”
He then went to praise production designer Nathan Crowley’s work, saying the film “is going to look absolutely beautiful blown up to 70 millimetre” and the conversion process will get underway in the coming weeks.
Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Michael Caine, Andy Serkis and David Bowie co-star in the film which had a fairly soft box-office turnout but was a hit on home video.
Critically, the film was widely praised, with some citing it as either Nolan’s best or their personal favourite.
