As results keep coming in, the power of the “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” double keeps breaking records left and right along with beating many projections.
As of now, “Barbie” is tracking for a $155 million domestic and $182 million overseas opening. Meanwhile “Oppenheimer” is headed for a $80.5 million domestic and $93.7 million overseas opening.
Together, the films have grossed more than $511 million worldwide, with $235 million of that being domestic. The overall U.S. box-office for the weekend is looking to come in at $301.6 million – only the fourth time ever that the domestic marketplace exceeded $300 million for the weekend.
“Barbie” has broken countless records – largest domestic opening to date, largest grossing day of 2023, largest preview haul of 2023, second-highest opening for a movie from a woman filmmaker, largest opening weekend for a film based on a toy and many more.
“Oppenheimer” is Nolan’s third-highest-grossing opening weekend ever, the biggest IMAX start for Nolan overseas, the biggest IMAX debut for 2023 ($21.1 million), the biggest global opening weekend for a biopic, the biggest global opening for a drama since 2019, biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film in 2023,
Everyone else seems to have taken a hit with the loss of IMAX screens hitting Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” with a second-weekend drop of 64% to $19.5 million, which isn’t good. It’s now vying for third with “Sound of Freedom” which will earn between $19-20 million, depending for its third weekend.
