Soderbergh On “Che” Series, “Logan Lucky 2”

Bleecker Street

The ever-prolific Steven Soderbergh has had a busy year this year – already releasing “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” back in February and premiering his limited series “Full Circle” last week on Max.

He’s also recently released the series “Command Z” via his website, along with holding a secret screening at the Metrograph in New York last weekend.

Promoting that as a part of a Reddit AMA (via The Playlist) earlier today, Soderbergh broached a number of topics brought up in the questions. One Redditor asked if he thought any of his earlier work would have been better in another format.

He immediately brought up his two-part 2008 film “Che” starring Benicio del Toro as famed revolutionary Che Guevara:

“I think if ‘Che’ were made ten years later, it might have been pitched as a series instead of two films.”

He was also asked about the chances of a sequel to his 2017 crowd-pleasing comedy “Logan Lucky” to which he revealed plans were made at one point that would focus on Daniel Craig’s scene-stealing Joe Bang character:

“Well, we had a prequel all teed up about how Joe Bang got thrown in jail, but when the movie didn’t perform well enough to justify another go, we dropped the idea.”

The $29 million film, which co-starred Channing Tatum and Adam Driver, scored very positive reviews and ultimately pulled in $48.5 million at the worldwide box-office.

He also asked about his ability to take risks in this industry, to which he said: “It’s clear I am the cockroach of this industry and will try to survive any version of it that comes along.”

Soderbergh’s next work is a Lem Dobbs-penned six-part mini-series about 19th-century Ottoman Empire physician, naturalist and Equatoria governor Emin Pasha.
