Netflix has removed its ad-free basic plan in both the US and UK, the removal coming one month after Netflix removed the same plan in Canada.
The now scrapped lowest-tier of the streaming service cost $9.99/month in the US and £6.99/month in the UK. Those still currently on the Basic plan can remain on it until you change plans or cancel your account.
With Basic gone, that just leaves three the tiers – Standard with ads for $6.99/month, Standard for $15.49/month, and Premium for $19.99/month. The latter two are ad-free.
In essence, the aim of removing that option will be to push customers to either the newer ad-supported tier or pay double for an ad-free tier – both of which are better for Netflix’s bottom line.
Netflix launched its ad-supported tier in late 2022. By May 2023, the streaming service reported that ‘Standard (with ads)’ has almost 5 million active users and ad-supported plans produce more revenue per customer.
Ad-supported Netflix is currently available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
