Continuing a sudden wave of “The Last of Us” news that began with the HBO show’s multiple Emmy nominations the other day, now comes a report tied to the games – more specifically, the second one.
Gustavo Santaolalla, the famed composer behind the games and TV series, appeared to let slip that a full PS5 remaster of “The Last of Us Part II” is on the way with all new features.
In an interview posted on Blender (via Press Start) he said comments which, when translated, indicated that “new editions” of the second game are on the way with one feature being the ability to interact with his in-game model in the village of Jackson to make him play certain tracks. He quickly added: “I can’t tell you anything else”.
Officially there’s been no hint of a PS5 version of “The Last Of Us Part II” – a patch was given to the PS4 version to allow it to run at 60fps on PS5. Otherwise, it’s still the same game as the PS4 version.
Whereas “The Last of Us Part 1” underwent a full remake in order to work in the engine used on ‘Part 2’, this one needs no such major overhaul and so any remaster would likely be an update to make full use of the PS5 power and bring the game’s graphic quality more in line with ‘Part 1’.
Such a possibility is not unexpected as getting such a title out before the second season of the HBO series launches in 2025 seems likely, along with said updated version laying the groundwork for an eventual PC port.
Naughty Dog famously spent a while working on a multiplayer take on the franchise dubbed ‘Factions’ until this May when reports emerged that the studio is reconsidering the long-term viability of the project and has essentially put it on a back burner.
More recently, there’s been chatter about a potential ‘Part III’ being in the works, but that hasn’t been revealed as yet.
