“Barbie” Set For $80-100 Million Launch?

Warner Bros. Pictures

It was always expected that filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” would come out on top of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” in that third weekend in July when both open. Now the first tracking figures for the films are in.

Deadline reports that the July 21st-23rd box-office is set to be a very busy one as both films and the second weekend of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” are set to do big business.

Whilst Warners is opting for a conservative $60 million start for the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-led take on the famed Mattel doll, the outlet indicates tracking shows “Barbie” presales at this point in time are already pacing ahead of “The Little Mermaid” remake.

This means a weekend start of at least $80 million is what they hear, with a $100 million kickoff not out of reach.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s three-hour atomic bomb creation movie is proving to be very smart counterprogramming – skewing older and male to Barbie’s younger and female target audience.

In its case, a $40-50 million opening is expected – putting it on par with Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” which opened to $50.5 million in 2017.

Then there’s the second weekend of Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” which is expected to come in around $35 million for the three day following a potential $100 million five-day launch from July 12th-16th.
