Corenswet On ‘Bright & Optimistic’ Superman

Netflix

No bigger entertainment news will come this week than the announcement of David Corenswet as the next Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as the next Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy” film at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Clocking in at 6’4 (an inch taller than Chris Hemsworth), Corenswet broke through a few years back with Ryan Murphy’s Netflix limited series “Hollywood” and “The Politician” before supporting turns in HBO’s “We Own This City” mini-series and A24’s film “Pearl”.

It was around the time of promoting those Murphy shows in 2019 that Corenswet’s name first became linked with the role. At the time, it wasn’t clear if Cavill would return, and the young actor’s Clark Kent-style looks were often commented upon in interviews and reviews.

Whilst promoting “Hollywood” in 2019, the actor spoke with EW about comments that he had similar looks to Cavill. That old quote is doing the rounds again this week, thanks to Variety, and the actor responded to the question with:

“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me. But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

Four years on, he has fulfilled that wish by landing the role and doing so in a project which Gunn has previously said will lean towards the optimistic ideal of a Superman – a being who is an alien, but one of deep humanity, kindness and compassion.
