HBO’s controversial drama “The Idol” is coming to a close a little earlier than expected.
The series originally received a six-episode order back in November 2021, but that was before the ‘creative changes’ behind the scenes that saw the departure of original director Amy Seimetz and a complete retooling of the show.
Now it turns out the show’s run will clock in at just five episodes for its ‘first season’ with the season finale set to air on Sunday, July 2nd.
HBO recently had to deny reports that the series had been designed as a limited series and thus had already been cancelled, saying a “decision on a second season of The Idol has not been determined”.
The show’s critical reviews have been disastrous. Ratings-wise, it launched OK, but further numbers since the premiere have not been discussed.
Co-created by Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), musician Abel ‘The Weekend’ Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, the series follows pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), who is determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America after a nervous breakdown derailed her last tour.
Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?
Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Suzanna Son and Hank Azaria also star.
Levinson also directs and executive produces with Tesfaye, Fahim, Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Joseph Epstein, Aaron L. Gilbert for Bron, and Sara E. White.
