Jennifer Lawrence Talks “Twilight” Rejection

Lionsgate

Jennifer Lawrence first broke through in 2010 with acclaimed indie “Winter’s Bone” before going full mainstream with roles in the “X-Men” and “The Hunger Games” franchises.

With the latter, her role as Katniss Everdeen saw her leading a four-film franchise from 2012-2015 that grossed $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office and made her a household name.

It turns out the actress, at one point, auditioned for another role that could’ve changed the trajectory of her entire career had she got it. Hoewever, she flubbed that audition.

Doing a recent interview on The Rewatchables podcast to promote her new comedy “No Hard Feelings,” Lawrence revealed:

“I auditioned for ‘Twilight’. They turned me down immediately. I didn’t even get a callback. But my life would’ve been totally different. I got ‘Hunger Games’, I think, like, a year later. It was probably after ‘Winter’s Bone.'”

The “Twilight” films launched in 2008 and spanned five movies that ran through 2012 – making $3.3 billion at the global box office and turning Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner into stars.

Lawrence added that she had to “churn out movies in between” her entries in “The Hunger Games” franchise so she wouldn’t only be known for those films:

“I was still in a franchise, so I was still trying to counteract the franchise-ness. I’d still be doing that if I was in ‘Twilight.’ But I almost didn’t do ‘Hunger Games’ because ‘Twilight’ had come out, and that fandom had happened.

When I was trying to talk to people about making this decision after [‘Hunger Games’] got offered to me, it was hard to explain to people… this level of fame. I assumed it was going to be the ‘Twilight’ level of fame, and that was never something I had in mind. I never wanted to be the most famous person on the planet. That’s a very different life than I pictured for me.”

Though Lawrence was still subjected to the tabloid culture of the era, she admits, “I would’ve been miserable, too,” had she starred in “Twilight” and been subjected to the kind of scrutiny the three young stars of the films were.

Lionsgate will open the prequel film “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” in November and Lawrence recently said she would be open to reprising Katniss should the franchise continue.
