“Blue Beetle” Part Of The New DCU

Warner Bros. Pictures

It turns out the new interconnected DC Universe under Peter Safran and James Gunn may end up getting an early entry.

Though Gunn’s own “Superman: Legacy” in July 2025 is touted as the first big film of the new era, we know the animated series “Creature Commandos” launching before it will also be a part of that universe.

Now, “Blue Beetle” film director Angel Manuel Soto indicates his upcoming film in August is also part of that future. The film stars Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes – a young man who gains superpowers when a hi-tech Blue Beetle scarab grafts onto him.

Speaking with Total Film Magazine about how the film fits into the larger DC landscape, he says:

“We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future installments of the DCU.

But we are not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”

This would match comments from Gunn himself, who revealed the other day on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast that: “the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle” before adding that “Superman: Legacy” is “the first full DCU movie”.

Soto meanwhile has high hopes for the film and has already planned it as the first of a potential trilogy:

“Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least, and taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga.”

Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and George Lopez also star in the film, which opens in cinemas on August 18th.
