One “The Flash” Cameo Isn’t Who You Think

Warner Bros. Pictures

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “THE FLASH” IN CINEMAS AND “THE FLASH” TV SERIES ON THE CW

The just released “The Flash” film contains a bucketload of cameos from across various DC works – many of them being either archival footage or CG recreations of various actors to have played roles over the years.

One of the surprise inclusions is from “The Flash” TV series. Not Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen character, but rather another version of The Flash – Jay Garrick.

The character was introduced in the second season of the series, played by Teddy Sears, before a twist reveal saw his true identity revealed as villain Hunter Zolomon/Zoom.

Subsequently, Garrick was played by John Wesley Shipp across multiple seasons, marking his third Flash-related role following playing Barry Allen in the 1990s “The Flash” series and as Barry’s father in the more recent show.

Sears returned to the Zoom role a few weeks back in the series finale of “The Flash”. His inclusion in “The Flash” film was unexpected, even to Sears himself. Speaking with TV Line, Sears confirms he did not film anything for the film:

“I mean… that looks like my likeness. People kept telling me that I was in the new Flash movie. I mean, I’m sleep-deprived with a newborn at home, so my memory is a little foggy. But I’m pretty sure I would have remembered shooting a major DC Studios film. Sadly, I’m not in this.”

Sources on both the TV and theatrical side at Warners have also confirmed to the outlet that it’s a case of mistaken identity – the cameo was not archival footage of Sears but a “generic Golden Age Flash representation played no actor of note.”

Sears has several projects on the way soon, including voicing Warlord in the animated Tomorrowverse movie “Justice League: Warworld” due out July 25th along with the NBC pilot “Wolf” co-starring Zachary Quinto.
