HBO is standing behind its controversial drama “The Idol” starring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd. The show follows a pop starlet who falls under the spell of a club promoter & cult leader.
Just two episodes into its six-episode run, a report in the New York Post on Thursday suggested “The Idol” wouldn’t be returning for a second season.
Their source suggests that the show will be a one-and-done and was always designed as a “limited series”. They also quote a separate HBO source who claims no decision has been made: “The door is definitely still open – it’s definitely not a decision [yet]”.
In a rare move for the premium cabler, who doesn’t comment on reports such as this, it went so far as to deny that first source and double down on the HBO source’s statement in a tweet yesterday via the HBO PR account:
“It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”
The series premiered to scathing reviews and saw its live viewership drop in its second week even as the first episode’s total viewership (with streaming and catchup viewing) appears to have outrated “The White Lotus” and “Euphoria” at the same point in time in their cycles.
