The long-in-the-works and highly expensive global spy thriller drama “Citadel” is on track to have the biggest debut to date for a series on Amazon Prime based on an original IP.
Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke wrote on Instagram in a post today that the series debut, which hails from Amazon Studios and the Russo Brothers’ AGBO production company, has “attracted one of the largest global audiences in the history of Prime Video – such an incredible performance for new and original IP.”
Salke did not elaborate further but Deadline indicates from production sources that the launch numbers for the series debut are behind only Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. That show premiered with more than 25 million viewers in its first day, according to Amazon at the time.
The Citadel series’ Twitter account indicates the show is Amazon Prime Video’s number-one title in nearly 200 countries and territories. The show, which boasts an estimated $300 million budget following extensive reshoots, launched with two episodes on April 28th.
Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville lead the cast of the six-episode series, which is generating local language satellite series spinoffs in India, Italy and Mexico that will see local stars in key roles.
