In April last year came word that Lionsgate was mulling a potential relaunch of “The Blair Witch Project” franchise.
Now it seems some progress may have been made with Production Weekly (via Bloody Disgusting) reporting that British filmmaker Oliver Park (“The Offering,” “Strange Events”) has been hired to direct an untitled “Blair Witch” sequel at the distributor.
In addition, the project is reportedly targeting a late summer/fall film shoot with the original “Blair Witch Project” film’s production company Haxan Films also attached.
The 1999 found footage indie horror film follows three student filmmakers who hike into the Black Hills in Maryland in 1994 to film a documentary about a local myth known as the Blair Witch. The three disappear, but their equipment and footage are ‘discovered’ a year later.
The feature became a global sensation, spawning a direct bigger budget sequel in 2000 and then the Adam Wingard-directed revival in 2016, along with multiple books and video games. It remains one of the most profitable films ever made – generating $246 million box-office from a budget well under $1 million.
As the site indicates, these details have not been confirmed by Lionsgate at this time, and the listing has both Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez as producers.
Myrick and Sanchez, who created the original, didn’t have much creative input on either of the follow-up films.
