Pedro Pascal is in final negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel, which is about to begin filming for Paramount Pictures.
The project is a follow-up to the 2001 best picture Oscar winner, which followed Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a former general who is sold into slavery and forced to fight as a gladiator under the rule of Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Set decades later, the story will center on Lucius (Paul Mescal), son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus. Djimon Hounsou is expected to return as Juba, a fellow gladiator and one-time ally of Maximus.
Also onboard are Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, Barry Keoghan as Emperor Geta, and Denzel Washington in an unknown role. Details of Pascal’s role are also under wraps.
David Scarpa (“Napoleon,” “All The Money In the World”) is penning the script, and Scott will produce with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher.
At the time of the release, “Gladiator” grossed $460 million at the box office and earned eleven Oscar nominations – winning five awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
Paramount has set a November 22nd 2024 release date.
