“The Pope’s Exorcist” Getting A Sequel?

Screen Gems

A sequel to the recently released “The Pope’s Exorcist” is in the works at Screen Gems according to Bloody Disgusting.

The outlet’s sources indicate that development is already underway but there are no further details at this time. Oscar winner Russell Crowe is expected to return though.

The news comes as the first film is still very much in cinemas and has pulled in $52 million worldwide box-office haul so far, after just one week of release, from an $18 million budget.

Crowe plays real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in the Julius Avery-directed film which could well become something of a “Conjuring”-style franchise for Screen Gems.

The outlet indicates there is no shortage of cases from Amorth’s career that could be done – the Italian priest is reported to have performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican.

In the first film, Amorth investigates the possession of a child and uncovers a conspiracy the Vatican has tried to keep secret. Franco Nero, Laurel Marsden, Cornell S. John and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney star and Ralph Ineson voices the demon.
