“Outer Banks” actor Drew Starkey is set to star opposite Daniel Craig in Luca Guadagnino’s film adaptation of the William S. Burroughs short novel “Queer” for The Apartment production company.
In addition, Lesley Manville (“The Crown”), Jason Schwartzman (“The Darjeeling Limited”) and Henry Zaga (“The New Mutants”) have also all jumped onboard the project.
The story is centered around a man named Lee (Craig), who recounts his life in decadent 1940s Mexico City among a group of American ex-pat college students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits.
Self-conscious and insecure, Lee soon becomes infatuated with a discharged American Navy serviceman named Allerton (Starkey). Allerton is indifferent to his advances, but eventually relents – only driving Lee’s obsession further. The pair soon head off to South America in search of a mythical drug.
American playwright Justin Kuritzkes – who worked on Guadagnino’s recent comedy “Challengers” starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Fast – has adapted the novel for the big screen.
The project is set to start shooting this month at Rome’s refurbished Cinecitta Studios with the film likely seeing a release in 2024.
