Black Talks “Super Mario” Sequel Wishes

Illumination

With the astonishing success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” launch, the game’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri may be planning to re-team again.

In an interview with Screen Rant recently, Shigeru says: “I think there’ll be opportunities in the future” regarding the two companies working together again, whilst Meladandri confirms he’s been invited to join the board of directors of Nintendo – suggesting a pretty solid partnership.

With the film pulling in around $376 million worldwide over the Easter holiday weekend, sequel talk is inevitable. Actor Jack Black, who plays Bowser in the film, is already talking up the possibility and says he wants Pedro Pascal to play the villain Wario in a follow-up.

Speaking with GameSpot, Black says it’s “not a given that Bowser will return” and that having done a few “Kung Fu Panda” films with a different villain every movie, he suggests “they may do the same thing”. He then says:

“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario! Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

Wario doesn’t appear in the new film, but a post-credits scene does indicate a Yoshi egg reveal.

Meanwhile, a music video from the film with Black singing “Peaches” was released the other day – the clip already pulling in over five million views. Made in collaboration with Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett, the video has Black in a kind of Bowser costume singing about his unrequited and disturbing stalker-ish love for Princess Peach.

Illumination has posted their own version on their official YouTube channel. Variety is reporting that the song will be eligible to be submitted for best original song consideration at the Oscars.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is now in cinemas everywhere.
