Netflix has announced a straight-to-series order for an untitled animated series set within the world of the “Stranger Things” franchise.
“Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer say the series would be in the vein of “Saturday morning cartoons” – likely referring to 1980s-era cartoon success stories like “Masters of the Universe” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.
Sydney-based animation house Flying Bark is handling production with Eric Robles (Nickelodeon’s “Fanboy & Chum Chum”) serving as showrunner. The Duffer brothers, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, will executive produce the series.
Right now it’s not certain if any of the cast will reprise their roles for the animated series, which does not yet have a title. Matt and Ross Duffer say in a statement:
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues.”
The Duffers’ Upside Down Pictures label, which has a major overall deal at Netflix, is backing the project, which will join the upcoming fifth and final season of the series along with a London stage show titled “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” and an untitled live-action spinoff of the flagship series in the works.
The Duffers are also linked to adaptations of the manga “Death Note” and Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel “The Talisman”.
