As part of a retrospective panel at Star Wars Celebration in London, Disney confirmed that “Return of the Jedi” will be returning to cinemas for a limited run.
In the United States, the film will play in cinemas from April 28th-May 4th, whilst the U.K. will get the film from April 28th-May 1st. The screenings will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film’s original debut.
A Dolby website listing first suggested the news, and it’s expected this will be the 1997 Special Edition of “Return of the Jedi”. The re-release will also be available in other regions, yet to be announced.
The Richard Marquand-directed film is often considered the weakest of the original trilogy, but certainly not without plenty of moments that have become cinematic history and are still widely liked.
Acclaimed artist Matt Ferguson crafted a new poster for the event following his previously illustrating the 40th-anniversary artwork for “The Empire Strikes Back” in 2020. That art can be seen below.
In an official statement, Ferguson says: “I’m so happy and grateful to get to work on these movies again, even more so to be given the freedom to continue what I started with Empire. For that poster, a cold mechanical vibe completely takes over the whole composition. But Return of the Jedi is very much the triumph of Luke and the Rebels, so I wanted to have more of the warmer colors coming back into the art, hence pivoting to green with red accents.”
