Amazon Orders “Cruel Intentions” TV Series

Sony Pictures

Amazon has reportedly handed out an eight-episode series order for a TV series adaptation of the 1999 cult classic “Cruel Intentions” which could be released through their ad-supported streaming service Freevee.

Over the years, various attempts have been made at such an adaptation of the film, itself a spin on the classic novel “Dangerous Liaisons”. In 2021, Amazon Studios, IMDB TV and Sony Pictures Television were teaming to produce such a series.

The story follows two ruthless step-siblings who would go to great lengths to stay on top of the social pyramid – in this version, the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington, D.C. college.

After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do anything to preserve their power and reputations – even attempt to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.

The most notable previous attempt at an adaptation was NBC’s failed 2016 pilot, which saw Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her Kathryn Merteuil role from the original film as it followed her now grown up son.

Gellar has subsequently spoken about how grateful she is that version didn’t go forward, as the material wasn’t right for a network show.

FOX also attempted a prequel series which was cancelled before going to air. Three episodes were then recut into the direct-to-video film “Cruel Intentions 2” in 2001.

The 2021 reimagined version of the series was to be written and executive produced by Phoebe Fisher with Sara Goodman. It’s expected that is still the case. Filming reportedly begins next month in Toronto.
