Johan Renck To Direct “Prisoner in His Palace”

HBO

Emmy-winning HBO’s “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck is set to helm the film “The Prisoner in His Palace” for Fremantle and Sinestra. The project is currently in development.

Based on Will Bardenwerper’s bestselling book, the film tells the story of twelve U.S. soldiers who guarded Saddam Hussein in the months leading up to his execution.

The project is said to explore the two distinct sides of Saddam Hussein: the cruel tyrant who used torture and murder as tools, and the contemplative prisoner who exhibited dignity and courage in the face of death.

The book explores the guard’s experiences and shows how Hussein’s presence affected them on a personal level. Bardenwerper will serve as executive producer, whilst author and screenwriter Darby Kealey will adapt the book.

Renck’s most recent feature, “Spaceman,” stars Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano. It premieres on Netflix later this year.
