Kevin Smith will host a one-night-only screening of “Jersey Girl: The Snyder Cut” on Sunday May 28th, at Smith’s Smodcastle Cinemas theater (former Atlantic Moviehouse) in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey where the film was shot.
This new take is an extended director’s cut completely overhauling his 2004 “Bennifer” bomb, which starred Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez. The “Clerks” filmmaker will also host a “revelatory Q&A” after the screening set for 5pm that day.
Whereas the film’s theatrical version clocked in at 102 minutes, this alternate take comes in at just over 120 minutes. Much of that is said to be due to an entirely re-edited first act.
Lopez only has a relatively short appearance early in the theatrical version, with the film mostly focusing on media publicist Ollie Trinke (Affleck) raising daughter Gertie (Raquel Castro).
The extended version’s changes are described as being “the closest to his original script, with an entirely different first act that features waaaay more JLo”.
This marks the extended cut’s first public screening since Vulgarthon 2005 at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles. The extended version has never been released on home video platforms.
“Jersey Girl” originally opened March 2004 in cinemas, grossing $35.5 million against a budget of $35 million. Liv Tyler, George Carlin and Jason Biggs co-star.
