“Spider-Man” Villain Sandman Returning?

Sony Pictures

2021’s multi-verse spanning “Spider-Man: No Way Home” saw numerous actors from the five older Spider-Man films reprise their roles in the MCU, with Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) taking center stage.

Several others were also on hand, including Rhys Ifans reprising his Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard role and Thomas Haden Church back as Flint Marko/Sandman. The latter two were limited to mostly voice roles for fully CG characters aside from brief human appearances in the finale.

Church first played his role in 2007’s “Spider-Man 3” and served as the main villain of that film – but ended up having to share screen space with a poorly-received take on Venom (Topher Grace). Still, he managed to be the spotlight of the entire film’s best sequence involving his character’s rebirth as The Sandman.

Now, in a new interview with The DisInsider, Church said conversations are taking place about future big screen appearances for his character:

“We had a whole story involving his daughter, for ‘No Way Home,’ and it just ended up [cut]. There was just so much going on…Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige], we all had a lot of conversations.

And I would say that conversations have been had about the possibility of Sandman coming into a future iteration of it. The conversation has happened about him coming back and maybe picking up a more fulfilling story and being not just Sandman.”

Further into his answer, he doubles down on his statement, saying of his potential return: “That’s been discussed.”

Church is hardly the only actor from previous “Spider-Man” films who is open to return, with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Willem Dafoe all seemingly up for the possibility in interviews following the release of ‘No Way Home’.

Neither Sony nor Disney has yet to announce their plans for another live-action “Spider-Man” movie beyond confirming they’ve settled on the story they’ve wanted and are currently writing it.
