“Good Burger” stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are set to return for a sequel that has officially been greenlit for the Paramount+ service.
The original 1997 comedy feature was based on a recurring sketch within the Nickelodeon comedy series “All That” and follows a slacker high school student who takes a summer job flipping burgers in order to pay for damages he caused to his teacher’s car.
That film received mixed reviews from critics but was commercially successful, grossing $23.7 million off an $8.5 million budget and amassing a cult following over the years.
The sequel will see Dexter Reed (Thompson) down on his luck after another one of his inventions fails. Ed (Mitchell) welcomes Dex back to Good Burger with open arms and gives him his old job back.
With a new crew working at Good Burger, Dex devises a plan to get back on his feet but unfortunately puts the fate of Good Burger at risk once again.
News of the sequel was revealed on Friday’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and is said to begin production in May with plans to debut it on the Paramount+ service later this year. Thompson issued a statement saying:
“I can’t believe it’s been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger!. Being a part of something so many generations of people have come to love has made me so proud and now to be back where it all began working on the sequel is surreal! Love performing with my brother Kel and can’t wait to show the fans what these characters have been up to since we last saw them.”
Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert, who co-wrote the original film, serve as writers and executive producers on the sequel whilst Phil Traill will direct for Nickelodeon Studios.
